仮想通貨やブロックチェーンの米リサーチ企業Crebaco Global社のCEOを務めるSidharth Sogani氏は、もしインドが法律で仮想通貨の取引・利用を全面的に禁止すれば、国として129億ドル(約1兆3600億円)の損失につながると見積もっている。
インドの仮想通貨に対する規制方針は、不明確な状況が続いている。先月末には、インド政府の仮想通貨諮問委員会が、「政府が発行する仮想通貨を除き、民間における仮想通貨利用・取引など全面禁止を推薦する」とした報告書を提出した。しかし、過去の状況をみても、その時の事情や発言する人物によって内容が異なり、報道も二転三転しているとみられる。法的な最終決定は未だ下されていない状況だ。

仮想通貨メディアAMBCryptoが、Sogani氏に損失額の算出方法を確認したところ、Crebaco Global社が複数の企業を調べ、仮想通貨の利用が法律で認められた場合の収益や総売上のデータを算出したと回答したという。またSogani氏は、インドにある複数の仮想通貨取引所の2018年の出来高も調査したと説明した。
Crebaco Global社は、インドの中央銀行が仮想通貨を禁止したことを理由に、マルタや米国などインド以外で仮想通貨サービスをすることを決めた企業も考慮した。インド人が創設したこれらの会社は、昨年何十億ドルもの利益をあげているという。
Sogani氏によれば、世界最大級の仮想通貨取引所バイナンスにおいて、2018年の1年間の出来高の内、インドでボリュームは全体の約8%を占めているという。インドが仮想通貨業界において、大きな市場であることを示唆している。
Sogani氏は、仮想通貨の様々なユースケースについて、インド政府にレポートを提出するなどの活動をしてきた。それにも関わらず、インド政府が仮想通貨を禁止する意向であることに非常に驚いているという。しかし、インド政府の動向は楽観的に見ているとも言及した。
インド政府は、13億人もの国民が仮想通貨禁止の法律を守っているか、監視する方法はないだろう。技術革新や企業の利益損失を考慮し、規制をしながらも仮想通貨の利用を認めるのではないか。
